Weekly Update 10-30-11

Dear Families,
We could still use your help for tomorrow’s Halloween party. If you can be around to help us, please let your teacher know or check in with Nancy first thing in the morning. Remember, if it’s your day off, please come, but you must bring your grown-up (or pay the drop-in-day fee). Festivities begin at 10:00 and last until noon. Thank you!
We are pleased to announce that Sally Tavassoli will be joining the Dragonfly staff as our new lead teacher in the Aspens class.  Sally found us on the internet before moving to Santa Fe from Louisville last summer, and has substituted in all the elementary classes since early September. Much of her academic work has been in experiential learning — she wrote and implemented curriculum that integrated anthropology and science for a diversity lab workshop for the University of Missouri in St. Louis, but she also has teaching experience in upper elementary grades.  Please join us in welcoming her to our school community.
Also welcome our newest Dragonfly student, Cruz Vasquez, and his family into our Seeds classroom. We simultaneously bid a fond farewell to Luisa Hoffman and her parents as they move to Portland in November. We will miss you!
Attached please find our updated student and staff directories. Save electronically for your reference!

Weekly Update

Dear Families,
Our hearts and those of all the parents, grandparents, friends, relations and passers by, were touched by the sight of your children on their wheels,  in motion for two hours on Friday morning. Our top rider was Gavan Wegner with 46 laps, followed closely by Rami Jaggers and Kagan Rowland with 35 and Robin Menetrey and Grace Wagner with 33.  When the national press bemoans the health and increasing obesity of American children, it is lovely to see children going against that tide. (Not to mention the consciousness of  safety and team effort that the children brought to this event.)We are grateful for your parenting choices and for the children you are raising.  Keep up the good work!
The first of attachments to this email is the count of how many laps each child completed. If your family solicited pledges for this event, please collect them and give your donors a tax-deductible donation letter for their records (attached to this email as the second document and hard copies in your classrooms).  Thanks to our amazing and energetic riders and to all the families who came out to support this event by standing near the river’s edge, handling safety enforcement, running errands and soliciting pledges. Thanks again to Mike Chapman of The Broken Spoke for on-site bike repair and maintenance. We’ll be sure to have another wheels day in spring for the pure fun of it.
We are sorry to announce that we will be looking for a new teacher for the Aspens class starting immediately. Betsy Conover will not be returning to finish out the year in this class. As a school which values communication, it is disconcerting when we need to concede that differences are sometimes irreconcilable and that we need to move on. That being said, if you know of a talented elementary teacher who is looking for a position, please send that person our way.
