Weekly Update 11-20-11

Thanks for being a part of

Dragonfly School!

Dear Families,

We are looking forward to seeing all of you here to enjoy Stone Soup with us on Tuesday. Entertainment begins at 11:30 in your classroom and then we’ll all proceed to the great big room for lunch together around noon. We could definitely use some help with set-up (right at drop off or show up at 11:00) and clean-up after the event. Please let us know if you are available to help by responding to this email.
We are thankful for you!

The Aspens and the Seeds worked well as a team cleaning our reach of the river today. We filled a couple of trash bags of garbage, collected sanded glass for projects and held hands a lot. The Aspens were competent as teachers, helping Seeds get their fingers into their gloves and giving useful  information. The quote of the day came from our oldest student (age 11) and was directed at our youngest student (not yet 3). “That is a leaf. Leaves belong in nature. Trash goes in the bucket.” (see photo) On a similar note, the Saplings found fossils as an example of things they were thankful for in nature on their hike to Tesuque Creek.

It was suggested to me that we help you locate our bake sale donors to enable you to better patronize those businesses who have contributed to the school. Whoo’s Donuts is located between Whole Foods and Chocolatesmith on Cerrillos. Pizza Centro is in the Design Center and also in the Agora in Eldorado. Fresh for Less Produce is on the corner of St. Francis and Cerrillos.

Weekly Update 11-13-11

Dear Families,
Once again Dragonfly came away from the Recycled Art Festival with two prizes (third year running!); the Saplings brought in the prize for “Best Environmental Message” with their model of a compost pile and the Seeds won third place in the children’s division (preschool-2nd grade) for the Recycled Rainbow(Rainbows are Tops!). These tied into the school theme along with the Root Vegetable Garden presented by the Spuds and the box gardens created by the Aspens. We hope that you all had a chance to come and enjoy the show. Lots of fun and great ideas there!
Your donated baked goods made quite a showing, as well, alongside the breakfast burritos made by the Aspens class in the professional teaching kitchen at the Santa Fe Community College (photo attached) and wonderful items from Pizza Centro, Whoo’s Donuts, Santa Fe Baking Co, Fresh for Less Produce, Albertson’s and Sunflower Market. Thanks to everyone who contributed goods and/or time! Special thanks to Leslie Kelly and Mark Pilato for spearheading this event.
Thank you also for your efforts in the Wheelathon in October. Our pledges so far equal $892!
Here is an updated staff contact list since the one sent out prior contained an error. Please save this list for your records.

Recycle SF Art Festival

Come see our students’ recycled work in the artists exhibition! We are also excited to have been offered the chance to hold a bake sale during this event which can bring in 3,500 visitors

The Famous Trash Fashion & Costume Contest will take place on Friday, November 11, 2011 at El Museo Cultural on Paseo de Peralta at 7:00 pm.

Youth Art Exhibit and vendors from around the country will be available as well from 9-5 on Saturday, Nov. 12 and 10-5 on Sunday, Nov. 13 which is also when we will be running our bake sale. Come enjoy the art and have a lovely snack while you’re at it!

We are also collecting disposable napkins, plates and utensils to use in serving; this is a great way to use up those mis-matched paper leftovers from the birthday/St. Patrick’s Day/ Thanksgiving  party that are still sitting in your cupboard. Bring them to our school kitchen anytime if you’d like to donate them to this cause. (It’s as recycled as we could think to be for such an event…)

See you there!

Weekly Update November 6

Dear Families,
We hope you will all come by for a visit to the Recycled Art Festival at El Museo Cultural next weekend. Thanks to the many of you who have volunteered time towards this event. We also look forward to our Stone Soup community lunch this month. Grandparents are especially invited to come.
Please give your child a thorough lice check this week. We have only seen recurrence in students who have had lice previously; no recent new cases, but please help us with this task just to be sure.
It’s time to bring your indoor shoes and have them at school for snow season. Something with a sole that could make it outdoors in emergency is best. Indoor sneakers probably beat the standard slipper for versatility, letting children skip a change of footwear on drier days. This helps us keep our floors dry and our feet comfortable. Thank you!
