Weekly Update 1-22-12

Dear families,
We were glad to see those of you who made it to our Open House on Saturday. We hope you enjoyed your time with other current and prospective Dragonfly families, as well as our staff.
Our thanks to the firefighters of Station #1 for visiting us on Friday to share information about fire safety and demonstrating all their gear (and how scary they might look if they show up during an emergency). We have promised them a video of our own “Fire Song” so that they may share it with other schools, too!
Please have your child bring in a book this week to donate towards the Hooked on Books Program; that is the child admission price to this week’s Friday field trip. Thanks! If you’d like to volunteer as a chaperone to help us walk to NDI, please talk to your teacher.
We began our school-wide pen pals project last week. Each child will have a pen pal from another classroom with whom they will correspond. Then pen pals will have the opportunity to share pizza lunch together on Valentine’s Day.
Thanks to the many of you who have already taken our survey. You can still share your views by following the link:

Ice Skating

The Saplings recently went to the Los Alamos Ice Skating rink for some outdoor fun.  We were so glad to have hot chocolate at the end of our field trip!  These first and second graders have certainly enjoyed their time outdoors this winter.

Hibernation

The Saplings recently completed a thematic unit about hibernation.  We studied the various ways different animals hibernate and integrated this unit into literacy and math.  Also, each student made a hibernation diorama about a specific animal.

The Seeds class enjoyed visiting our dioramas and asked plenty of great questions!

Aspens class news

The Aspens have started a book club/discussion group!! We are so excited about this and plan to discuss a different genre every 3-4 weeks, we are now reading a historical fiction book called “Boston Jane”.

In January we will launch our reading program, ”The Amazing Reading Race”. The students will each have passports that they use to track their “miles” around the globe.

Winter Wonderland

Here are some of our Seeds students on the coldest day of the school year. Children play and work outside every day, with only extremely rare exceptions for weather.

It was a great challenge to  work with the very dry snow. Packing snow bricks required lots of stomping! (Though the snow-filled buckets were light with air.)We gained direct experiential  knowledge of  the powdery  quality of very cold snow .

Work in progress…
