Dear Families,

As the year draws to a close, we are working with your children to ease transitions and keep connections. Please let us know how we can best support your family at this time.

If you have Spring Fair auction donations to bring to school, you may drop off larger physical items in Dee’s office (between the kitchen and the great big room) this week. Paper items and small objects may be left in the envelope on the office door at any time. We have some wonderful items, and it isn’t too late to add yours! Thank you! Please also bring any last minute books and media to the computer room this week and easy-up canopies, as well.(Make sure to label with your name.) We’ll be setting up starting Friday evening after school until 8PM. Drop by if you have a bit of time!

DATES TO LOOK OUT FOR:

MONDAY, MAY 7-NO SCHOOL-TEACHERS IN-SERVICE

WEDNESDAY, MAY 9- FIRST INTERNATIONAL BIKE & WALK TO SCHOOL DAY- We just found out that this event is taking place, but of course we support cycling or walking to school every day as part of a healthy lifestyle. Please participate today by showing up at school motor-vehicle-free, if you can. We encourage all our staff and families to reduce their carbon footprint by considering carefully how we travel from place to place every day. Special thumbs up to Kurt and Gavan Wegner who can be seen on their bikes at Dragonfly nearly every day ! See safety tips at the end of this email.

FRIDAY, MAY 11-CRAZY HAIR AND HAT DAY- Dress up your tresses for this silly day!

SATURDAY, MAY 12, 10-2-SPRING FAIR is almost here. If you haven’t yet signed up for the big day, now’s the time! We’ll need help for set-up and break-down, as well as the manning of all our booths during the fair proper.

TUESDAY, MAY 22-BEACH DAY-We’ll break out our pools, sprinklers and water toys for beach day. Don’t forget your swim suit, sun hat, beach towel and sunscreen all over your body.

THURSDAY, MAY 24, 10:30-END OF YEAR PERFORMANCE-Come see all of our classes in a grand show for your enjoyment. Summer goodbyes and popsicles to follow.

THURSDAY, MAY 24, 12:00 EARLY RELEASE-LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

WALK AND BIKE TO SCHOOL TIPS-Safety is the priority for any walk or bike to school event.

To find the safest route to school, look for:

Places to walk or bicycle that are separated from traffic.

Choose sidewalks or paths wherever possible, even if that means the trip will take a little longer.

If there are no sidewalks or paths, walk as far from motor vehicles as possible, on the side of the street facing traffic.

Places to cross (if necessary).

Minimize the number of street crossings.

Avoid busy, high-speed or multi lane roads, wherever possible.

When available, cross at a location with an adult school crossing guard.

Pedestrian- and bike-friendly drivers.

Look for places where drivers are paying attention, yielding to pedestrians and cyclists and respecting speed limits.

A comfortable feeling.

Use a route that avoids potential problems like loose dogs, the presence of criminal activity, vacant buildings or poorly lit streets.

At Ghost Ranch, the Aspens were able to cast their very own fossil of New Mexico’s indeginous dinosaur population. The students had so much fun during our museum tour and I was surprised at all to see how much they already knew about dinosaurs!! Afterward, we were able to enjoy a nice hike and lunch, taking in the beautiful sights of Abiquiu all around us!

Dear Families,

April is in full swing, and everything will just get busier from here on out. Get ready!

Time to stop sorting out those yogurt containers. Dragonfly has joined a brand new program with Terracycle to RECYCLE ALL SIZES and STYLES of DAIRY TUBS!! Bring all your dairy tubs and lids to the grey bin on the driveway or email me directly for a prepaid shipping label to box and send your own big collection free from any UPS shipping site.

Dragonfly receives 3 cents per tub (which we can use to buy products or donate on to other good causes), but even better, we keep those tubs out of the landfill. Remember, these containers are not approved for recycling through the city’s curbside recycling program; if you place these in your curbside bin and the collectors mistakenly collect them, they may spoil the batch and end up in the garbage anyway. Terracycle uses a different process to include this different type of plastic. (We also continue to collect energy bar wrappers as part of our collaboration with Terracycle; find out more at http://www.terracycle.net/en-US/ )

Terracycle Dairy Tub Brigade accepted waste: all cream cheese tubs and lids, all sour cream tubs and lids, all cheese tubs and lids, all yogurt tubs and lids, all butter tubs and lids, all margarine tubs and lids, any other dairy product tub, foil tops, plastic tub tops, any other type of packaging on all dairy tubs.

DATES TO LOOK OUT FOR:

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 8:30 DEPARTURE-SPUDS AND ASPENS VISIT THE RIO GRANDE ZOO-Please be sure that your child is already sunscreened, has a sun hat, water bottle and a sack lunch. Contrary to our typical request, disposable packaging for lunches will simplify this field trip. Please securely buckle your child’s car seat into the designated van and label visibly with your child’s name. The Spuds’ class looks forward to identifying up close “animals of the Americas” from their current unit of study. Students will return in time for regular pick-up.

THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 3:15-4:30-SPRING FAIR PLANNING MEETING. Please RSVP for childcare. We are making a lot of progress, and we could use your help. Come join us: the more, the merrier!

Let’s make this day as green as possible: think green, wear green and pack green foods in your lunch. We will picnic as a whole-school group and share popsicles after lunch.
